Last week, SAP Concur announced that it’s shuttering metasearch engine Hipmunk and focusing its efforts on other products.
One such product is itinerary manager TripIt, which has launched a new feature called Carbon Footprint. In addition to allowing travelers to see and track flight emissions from their business trips, the tool also includes tips for offsetting carbon emissions.
TripIt claims it’s the “first travel organizing app to automatically aggregate flight emissions across providers, post-booking” and gives users a “holistic” view of their air travel footprint.
Carbon footprints are measured using the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, which is the methodology used by American and European government agencies. The calculation includes factors such as distance, flight class and environmental elements.

The tips offered to travelers for offsetting flight emissions are, at this time, just that - tips - though a spokesperson for SAP Concur says TripIt is currently exploring offset partners.
Examples of offsetting practices include recycling trash bags or donating to environmental organizations. Users are also encouraged to check out the Gold Standard as a resource to learn more about sustainability initiatives.
The Carbon Footprint feature is available to both free and Pro TripIt users
